Blogmas Day 12: Merry Christmas!

So it’s day 12 and the end of Blogmas 2017. It also means it’s Christmas Day, so if you want to look back on what else I’ve written this winter, click HERE.

All that’s left is to say Merry Christmas! I hope you all have the day of dreams and get all the presents you’ve wished for and more. It’s not easy for some over Christmas though and HERE’s some ideas of how you can help next year.

Speaking of next year, it’s the next time you’ll be hearing from me as I’ll be taking a few days off from blogging. Frankly this has been exhausting and I want to have a few days away from writing and spend time with my family. Also something new may be coming your way in the New Year. That’s all I’m going to say about it, stick around for more come January 1st ;)

Again I hope you all have a wonderful time this Christmas and a great New Year whatever you’re up to!

Happy Listening!

Blogmas Day 11: What Christmas Means To Me

Christmas is such a magical time, with Santa and all the festive lights. But it means different things to different people.

It means a lot to me as I get to spend time with my family that I don’t get to see that often, particularly last year as we met up with all our family in Scotland.

Also this year as all in my immediate family (Mum, Dad and twin sister) are all working, so it’s nice to have some time off and see them. It’s the time to open presents, sure, but time too to appreciate what you have and being grateful you have a roof over your head and food on the table for Christmas. Some families and people don’t have that, so here’s some ways you can help

There’s just a couple of things that Christmas means to me. What about you? I’d love to know.

Blogmas Day 10: My 2018 Resolutions/Goals

2018 is just around the corner and I really wanted to write some personal goals I’d to complete.

1. Write more!
I don’t write on this blog anywhere near as much as I should. It’s also partly why I decided to Blogmas this year - I wanted to get inspired to write. For me it’s not about being the next Zoella, but just having a creative outlet for my love of music.

2. Run a 10K
I know my family will just laugh with the idea of me running a 10K, but I want to genuinely get fitter and take up running again. A 10K is one of the things I’ll strive to complete by the end of the year.

3. Get to 10,000 steps every day
The first step to getting to that kind of distance is to walk the recommended 10,000 steps a day with the help of my FitBit. My lunchtime walks (and hopefully runs) should help with that.

4. Post more on Instagram
I know social media is supposed to be ruining our lives, but there’s one tool I’ve never really used that well which is Instagram. I only post blog stuff on it and it’d be nice to post more personal stuff on there.

5. Go clubbing
I don’t like clubbing anyway, but a certain incident in 2015 put me off clubbing for life and I get extreme anxiety when I even think about it.

It isolated me a lot at uni but now I’ve grown in confidence, I’d like to try clubbing again. If I don’t enjoy it then fair enough, but I’d at least like to say I’ve been for the first time in nearly 3 years!

There’s just 5 of the things I want to complete by the end of 2018. I know I’m wishing time away but it’s nice to write down what you want to achieve to look back on in a year’s time.

What are your 2018 goals? Let me know.

Blogmas Day 9: 2017 - Year In Review

2017 has been a whirlwind year. I graduated uni in May and started my internship in September. I also started (and sadly ended) a podcast, interviewed lots of great people and kept up with writing this blog (an achievement in itself!).

University
I graduated from uni in July, with a BA (Hons) in Popular Music Journalism, achieving a 2:1. I'm so proud of myself as uni was so stressful, especially third year. It went by in a flash though and before I knew it it was the last day of my degree and handing in my dissertation. University was a great life experience though and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Career
Once I finished my degree, the job search started. I applied for lots of jobs and internships, finally securing a year's internship with Siemens as an External Communications (PR) Intern. I've been in the role for 3 months - I enjoy it so much and I've had some amazing experiences. The rest of the internship will fly by I'm sure, but I'm getting stuck in as much as possible.

In terms of personal projects I created my political podcast Amy Talks Politics, and interviewed some great people including ITV News' Europe Editor James Mates and House of Commons journalist Andre Walker. You can listen to the episodes on Mixcloud if you wish. Due to conflicts and work commitments, I wasn't able to keep it up. But all is not lost! All I can say is that something new is coming in the New Year ;)

Below are a couple of my favourite memories and moments that stick out in my mind about 2017:
1. Posting tweets and creating social media posts for Her Majesty The Queen's visit to Siemens Gamesa in Hull in October. It was such an honour to help out and amazing to see The Queen in the flesh -  I know a lot of preparation went into it.
2. In September before starting my Siemens internship I got the opportunity to have a day of work experience at ITV News, shadowing the team and asking lots of questions. I've included a couple of pictures into the grid above, but make sure to read my separate post all about my day there.
3. A press trip I went on in April to Cairo, Egypt. It was to see lots of different projects and organisations funded by the European Union. Again I wrote a blog post about this, so read it here.
4. The family holiday to Greece in June, which was a great time to relax and unwind, particularly as university had finished.

I've had a great and fulfilling year looking back. It's nice to reflect as it seems the year is all doom and gloom, particularly in terms of what you see on the news. You should do this too, you'll see a great thing about this year I'm sure. Here's to 2018!

Blogmas Day 8: 10 Days with the iPhone X

Apple recently released the much-anticipated iPhone X, or ten as its official name. I bought one recently and have spent some time with it, so wanted to give you an overview of what I thought after it being in my possession for 10 days.

I know what you're going to say, why would you spend £1000 on a couple of pieces of glass?", well there's a few reasons: 1) I didn't £1000 on it. I got a great contract for the handset and it's actually a pretty good deal. 2) I desperately needed a phone upgrade. I had a battered 6S before the X and was toing and froing between the X and 8 Plus, but I knew if I bought the 8 Plus I would regret it and want the X so just went all out.

I waited a few weeks to receive my iPhone due to stock demands, but was instantly impressed when I took it out of the box - it looked so beautiful. I instantly saw the infamous 'notch' (more on that in a bit) and the full OLED screen display. I got the 256GB version and I have a great explanation as to why: my iPhone 6S was only 16GB (they've done away with that as the minimum storage now though) and I could only fit 100 or so songs on it.

I would've got the 64GB one but once I'd added up my photos, music and videos into the total capacity it would have been over. I'm so glad I made that decision as I can now listen to my entire music library and save as many photos as I like without worrying that the dreaded 'Storage Nearly Full' message coming up.

Anyway, back to the phone itself. I was instantly terrified seeing all these drop and shatter tests of the iPhone X on YouTube, so decided to put it in a case. If you are getting this device, a great but not too bulky case is the Snugg, which has reinforced edges and two layers of case, so you know you're being protected when you drop your precious phone.

I went against all good advice and omitted a screen protector from my purchase. I have mixed feelings as to whether I regret this or not as there's hairline scratches on the display already and I haven't had it very long. Subsequently, I did buy a screen protector but can't for the life of me put it on without getting dust on the sticky side so it looks awful and there's dust in between the screen and its protector.

In terms of features, Face ID is definitely a stand-out one for me. It unlocks your phone by you simply looking at it, instead of using a temperamental fingerprint sensor. I find myself not having to enter my passcode anywhere near as much as I did on Touch ID when it wouldn't recognise my print. Also Face ID is now integrated into most apps, so you can use your pretty face to see your banking, watch TV and more. It's pretty versatile too so will recognise you in darkness, low-light, with a scarf over your face and sometimes with you not even hovering over it.

The infamous 'notch' is a widely debated topic: is it distracting? Does the phone need it? Here's my opinion: it doesn't bother me one bit. Like most things you get you used to it and it doesn't distract me from Netflix viewing or anything else. Also the 4K quality of shows such as The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime with the brilliant screen is just gorgeous, so all worries about said notch aren't worries anymore and a mere oversight.

Instead of boring you all for hours on end about the iPhone X, I thought I'd end with my official verdict: it's awesome and I really love it. Also the battery life is great, so if that isn't a selling point I don't know what is. Have you got an iPhone X? If so, let me know what you think.

You can buy the iPhone X at any major phone retailer or network, at your local Apple Store or online.

Featured Artist - AVEC

For Australian AVEC, it was a hard job writing latest single ‘Bones’.

She says “I wrote this song a long time ago and it was a tough one, to write and to record, because I never really knew, how this song should sound and how I want it to appear” but she needn’t worry about that, and it appears just as it should: melodic and atmospheric, something to hear whilst taking on a great quest.
She lists the likes of The Lumineers and Kings of Leon as her influences, and she’ll be influencing other people’s music very soon. Quiet but powerful and lyrically hopeful, AVEC’s voice is very haunting and if you like Indiana, you’ll love her. I can’t wait for her debut album What If We Never Forget to be released next year. You should be excited too.

Blogmas Day 5: The Christmas Tag

I was perusing Abbi's blog earlier this week and stumbled upon her Christmas Tag post with some really interesting questions. I'll answer them below and tag people who I would like to answer the questions on their blog.

1. What is your favourite Christmas film?
Without a shadow of a doubt it's got to be Elf! Although I don't know what channel is showing it this year so I don't know if I'll get to see it. It makes me laugh so much even though I'm not a child anymore and my family & I always watch it at Christmas time, it's the perfect festive comedy!

2. Where do you usually spend your Christmas?
At home, with my twin sister Sarah, Mum and Dad.

3. What is your favourite Christmas song?
There's about five that are my favourite, but topping my list would have to be Mary's Boy Child by Boney M. The steel pan drums bring a different flavour to a Christmas tune.

4. Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?
Sort of. For the last few years instead of a stocking, we've had little Christmas Eve bags of little items that we might find useful or humorous. This year my Mum came up with a great idea - we buy each other a present that is unique and thoughtful, pertaining to the person that's under a tenner. But it can't be chocolate, alcohol or any other standard Christmas present and there's a prize for the best one. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

5. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
Both. We have a main Christmas tree that's fake, but at Surrey Wildlife's Pine & Dine this year, I cut down a small and real pine tree that we use outside, decorated with tinsel and cute baubles.

6. What is your favourite holiday food/sweet treat?
My mum makes mini sausages with honey, I could eat them all day (and do on Christmas Day!)

7. What is the best Christmas gift you've ever received?
I've had lots of great gifts, but the best one would probably have to be the iMac I received in 2011. It was a total surprise and I definitely treasured it until I got a MacBook in 2014.

8. Where would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
I've been on a few Christmas holidays that were lovely, but I would love to visit New York - the decorations and festive spirit would be palpable.

9. Most memorable holiday moment?
There's honestly too many to name.

10. Do you make New Year's Resolutions? Do you stick to them?
Like everyone I make a New Year's Resolution or two, but don't get past week two of sticking to it 😂 I've learnt from my lessons now and won't make any because I know they're a lost cause.

11. What makes the holidays special for you?
Spending time with my family and us all enjoying the festivities together. Also we all finish work on the same day so will be happy about having some time off.

12. When do you start getting excited about Christmas?
I used to be so excited for Christmas that I would be psychically ill, but I'm a bit more tame now. As I've been working since September I haven't really had time to get excited about but I think when I finish work I'll be able to get into the full swing of things.

I reckon most of you bloggers already have all your Blogmas posts planned out so I'm not going to tag anyone specific. I invite anyone to answer these questions and let me know your favourite Christmas things.

Blogmas Day 4: Albums Of The Year 2017

It's that time again where I give you the verdict of what I think are my favourite albums of 2017. Let's not mess about with explanations and get straight on with it.

1. Kesha - Rainbow

One of the most anticipated comebacks of the last few years (particularly as Kesha Rose was embroiled in her rape allegations with Dr Luke), arrived this year - and it's one not to be missed. I love every song of this strong and thumping 'fuck you' to the people who have torn her down for whatever reason: they should be ashamed. My favourites are the two singles 'Hymn' and 'Learn To Let Go' as they're particularly poignant and helping her on the road to recovery.

2. Old Dominion - Happy Endings

I discovered Old Dominion last year during my interview with the lead actress in their 'Break Up With Him' video, which you can read here.

After that I became obsessed with their music and downloaded the whole debut album Meat & Candy. They’re back with their second though and it couldn’t be more perfect. I love every single song and there isn’t one I couldn’t recommend. You can buy/listen to the album on Spotify and Amazon (UK | US).

3. Gwen Stefani - You Make It Feel Like Christmas

I never knew Gwen Stefani was one for Christmas albums, but I was in fact proved wrong. Every song on this is perfectly festive and her duet with country star Blake Shelton (who I listen to a lot) makes me want to sing along every time it’s on my playlist. She makes good work of all the Christmas classics, here’s to more from Stefani next year. Listen on Spotify or buy on iTunes or Amazon (UK | US).

4. James Blunt - The Afterlove

After that song from 2005 that no-one in the UK will ever forgive him for, I think he’s earned a lot of peoples’ respect back with his latest release The Afterlove. His smash hit ‘OK’ with Robin Schulz was one of the summer anthems, and the entire albums exceeds every standard I had for it in my head.

Different singles from the album have charted at #1 in lots of countries around the world including Niger, with the video’s being nothing short of spectacular. Please download this album, I promise you will not regret it!

Download it on iTunes, buy it on Amazon (UK | US) or stream it on Spotify

I mostly listened to singles for the rest of this year to be honest so these are my top recommendations. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading and hopefully find your new favourite album ☺️

Happy Listening!

Blogmas Day 3: Ways to Help People at Christmas

Christmas is a tough time for a lot of people. No more so than if you’re homeless or don’t have enough money to get by. So I decided to list a few ways that you can help people this festive season, particularly as Christmas is all about giving.

Donate to Charity
I’ve already done this in place of sending my colleagues Christmas cards this year and the charity I donated to, Disability Challengers, I know will be very grateful. One great charity to donate to is Crisis, as they are helping the homeless this Christmas and giving them some lunch, the chance to use a shower and many other things we take for granted. Find out more here

Volunteer at/give items to a food bank
If you’re on your own at Christmas or want something nice to do, why not volunteer at your local food bank and hand out food to people less fortunate than ourselves? They also must have some great and eye-opening stories to tell.

You can also give your food to a food bank, as most people have some old tins at the back of their cupboard they’ve never used that are still in date. Also kids’ toys are great to give, as some children won’t get any presents this Christmas because their presents can’t afford it. Drop them off at your local food bank or search online for more ways to help.

Give essential items to a womens’ shelter
When women are homeless it can be a nightmare, as they have nothing to help with their menstruation and don’t have the money to buy sanitary products. You could create packs of everything they might need and take them down to your local womens’ shelter - they would be very much appreciated I’m sure.

Visit an elderly person and keep them company
If you have an elderly neighbour or know someone that does, Christmas can be a lonely time for them. Go and cheer them up by paying them a visit or giving them a call, letting them know that you’re thinking of them.

Even invite them for Christmas dinner and if you don’t know them that well, it’ll be great to listen to their fascinating stories.

Donate presents to a children’s hospital
Hospitals are grim places to be at the best of times, let alone spending Christmas in one. Children’s hospitals can’t afford to buy a present for everyone in them, so Magic Radio are running a great campaign where you buy an extra present for a child and take it into your local Wickes store or Hamley’s in London, and Magic will give that present to a child in hospital.

There’s just a few wonderful ways you can help those in need at Christmas. If you have anymore suggestions, please feel free to tweet me or leave them in the comments below.

Blogmas Day 2: Favourite Christmas Decorations 2017

I know you have probably all put your Christmas decorations up for this year already, but I wanted to share some of the decorations I have found that I think are really pretty.

This a really lovely tree topper as it’s very minimalistic and would be perfect for a small tree with no tinsel. Get it from Asda, in store or online

Aldi have this really gorgeous set of gold decorations, perfect for a gold theme (or a tree in general). I think the pine cone looks especially cute as it hang perfectly from a tree branch for that little bit of sparkle - and who doesn’t love some sparkle? You can get these in Aldi at a steal for only £2.99! You’ll have to go in store though, as sadly they don’t sell them online.

I saw this on the Homebase website and I had a little chuckle. What you definitely need at Christmas is a singing sloth, am I right? 😂 it’s such a brilliant novelty decoration and I’m sure anyone who sees it will laugh too. You can get it from Homebase here or at your local store.

John Lewis has a massive and very aesthetically pleasing Christmas collection of baubles, table decorations and ornaments. I’m not going to waste any time explaining why I like them, instead I’ll put the picture up and the link so you can go and buy it if you wish to.

I have many more to show but that would take you all day to read. If you have any cool decorations, send me a picture on Twitter or comment with it below.

Blogmas Day 1: Music Lover’s + Lifestyle Gift Guide

This post contains an affiliate link or two, meaning I might make a few pennies if you buy anything through my links on this post.

Today is my first day of Blogmas. I know I'm 12 days late to the party (I did that purposely as I have a full-time job so wouldn't be able to keep up), but nevertheless I have 12 days of Christmas joy to bring you through my writing.

I have a Lifestyle and Music gift guide for you today, so you're not rushing around with nothing to buy for those that love all things music/nice Pinterest-y things in their life.

Music

Speakers

Speakers are a great option for those wanting to play their music and loud and proud. These Denon speakers are everything you could ever want. It connects via bluetooth, is small and versatile, even working with Siri activation so you can be listening to music and ask for the latest weather through the same set of speakers.

There's three models of speaker you can choose from: the Envaya, Mini and Pocket. Each are varying in price, starting at just £89. Find out more info here.

Headphones

Just like everything, headphones come in a variety of different brands, prices and more. Beats, JBL and Sennheiser are all good brands for headphones, with reasonable pricing for some top-rated models. If not hearing any outside noise or your family shouting at you matters, then noise-cancelling is another addition of sound you can purchase.

Look for the best deals on Amazon (UK | US) or your local electricals store.

Vinyl

As I mentioned in my gift guide last year, vinyl has made a big resurgence in recent years, with 2017 being no different.

I have a few vinyl records myself that I won, and I know that they're great to look at. Whether they're stacked next to a record player or on display in your house, there's going to be someone who loves the gift of vinyl in your family and would really appreciate it.

Vinyl records aren't cheap new, but you can find some great second-hand deals on older or rarer songs. I would have a scout around Google to find the best deals. Amazon (UK | US) is also a good shout.

Record Player

As well as the records, or if your loved one has a pile of them but nothing to play them on, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get them a record player.

These are relatively inexpensive, but like the records, you need to search around for the best deals. Again Amazon (UK | US) is a good place to try.

Vouchers

As you may know if you want into a shop like Clintons or Tesco, there's a plethora of gift vouchers to buy - everything from clothing to online gaming to Netflix. The music voucher selection is great, listed below are my favourites.

Ticketmaster

Under the banner of "give the gift of live entertainment", Ticketmaster have a selection of gift cards for those who love gigs but can't quite afford to go. They might be able to put something towards that Taylor Swift show with a Ticketmaster gift card, which is also valid for Theatre and Sports events, so you're spoilt for choice really.

Apple Music/Spotify

If your loved one is streaming music (and using all the wifi data doing so), then a good idea would be to get them an Apple Music or Spotify voucher, giving them the chance to listen to their hearts' content. Apple Music offers the tiers of 3 months or 12 months' gift card choice. Find out more info here.

Spotify on the other hand offer a Spotify Premium Subscription voucher, which can only be bought in store and I haven't had the chance to go and see what the options are sadly. More info and T&Cs can be found here.

'In Music We Trust' t-shirt

I saw these on the web recently and decided that they were a really cool Christmas present idea. You buy a t-shirt or hoodie or something from the website and 50% of the profits get donated to Mind, who help people with depression. The bonus is that the designs are actually really cool (hint hint!) and it helps someone, so it's a win-win. Find out more here.

Band Merch

On the t-shirt note, a great gift idea for someone who loves a particular band's music is to buy them a piece of merchandise to add to their wardrobe/accessory collection. Lots of bands or record labels have online merch stores and you need to check where it's coming from in order to get it in time for Christmas, but most should be fine.

Lifestyle

Courage Queen

Do you want to be a strong woman who never worries about what anyone says and wants to put their anxiety behind them? The Courage Queen movement is all about that, and through Rachael's seminars and products you can help put that belief into yourself. Find out more about it here.

Root7 Geo Glasses

These glasses are perfect for just a small Christmas tipple or using as a display glass for something, as their cool geometric design belong on both Instagram and Pinterest. I wrote a little review of these so go and read all about them here.

That marks the end of my Christmas gift guide for 2017. Is there anything I've missed or any music-related items you're getting your relatives this year? Let me know.

Root7 Geo Glasses

Taking its inspiration from modern style terrariums, Root7's Geo Glasses look as if they belong on a marble table on Instagram. In two colours, Gold and Black, they certainly give the allure of glamour, but at a fraction of the price.

These glasses are also very deceiving about how much drink they can hold, as when poured it doesn’t look like very much, but in fact is the same quantity as a glass twice its size. Also it’s a treat to hold in your hand, with the reassurance that they won’t fall out easily.

With a stylish design and sexy exterior, the Root7 Geo Glasses are perfect for dinner parties or this years' Christmas gathering with the family, taking pride of place in your cupboard.

If you wish to purchase one, you can do so on Amazon (UK | US

Where's Blogmas?

It's December, so that means partaking in a little challenge to see if bloggers can handle the pressure live with the excitement of posting everyday for Blogmas.

But I'm doing things a little differently this year. I'm only posting for 12 days, from 12th-24th December. The reason for this is so that I can write quality posts for you to read and be able to keep up with my writing as opposed to rushing something for the sake of it. Think of it as a little Hooked On The Music advent calendar, with the prize being a new post about something interesting/intriguing or sharing my Christmas playlist.

Before I give away anymore surprises that I've got up my sleeve, it's best to wrap this post up by saying Happy December and that if you want to see what I included in Blogmas 2016, you can do so here.

What I've Been Listening To 🎧 | November 2017

Goodbye November - sorry for being so repetitive every month, but how is it the end of November already? It's nearly time for Christmas though, which is my favourite season of the year.

Nevertheless, I've been listening to a lot of music in November, even discovering some old tracks that I haven't listened to in years including a track from Busted and Blue (anyone remember Blue? They were great). Country has been a big part of my playlist again this month, but includes some new singles from artists that I've gotten to listen to over November. Also included is Joe Hicks and you may recognise that name if you're a regular reader as he was one of my Featured Artists in November - read what I said about him here.

Old favourite Lifehouse has made a return to the playlist this month and I'm so happy to be listening to their music again. I also went to see them a couple of years ago, you can read my review here. With that, here's this months' playlist and it's the usual affair: I'll put the tracklist and Spotify playlist below so you can listen if you would like to. Be sure to follow me on Spotify as I update the page with next month's tunes, so you'll be the first to see it.
